Gordon  E. Swanson b  Jul. 18, 1936 - d. Dec. 23, 2017

Gord was born Jul. 18, 1936 in Port Alice, BC - and was the first of three sons to Lawrence Swanson & his wife, Muriel.  Gordon sadly passed away on Dec, 23, 2017 at age 81.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne and a son, a daughter, step-daughter, brother, a cousin Pam and her husband Douglas, nieces and one nephew and predeceased by his father and mother and a younger brother.

Gordon died peacefully in his sleep at home in Surrey, where he resided with his wife, Suzanne, whom he was married to for 30 years. His passing came as quite a shock as I had just been in touch with him and talked to him just 2 days before though Gordon had been in poor health for quite some years  - and just 3 weeks after his death, the hospital called and advised that they now had a new heart valve ready for him.....well.....that was 3 weeks ..too late.

Gordon started with Air Canada airlines on Feb. 13, 1967 when he was 31  years old and he worked in many capacities. –Many knew him from the Rates and Tariff department – others from the years he worked at the Air Canada ticket office...later most of us got to know Gordon from the Airport where he worked in Terminal control and many of all the other various job functions needed around the airport.

He was extremely knowledgeable and a hard worker and therefore respected by his colleagues and peers – and he was never afraid to give a helping hand when I first started at the airport ....but later …when I became the airport training Instructor - it was my turn to help him during various training classes. And I remember when we went on strike in 1984 and Gordon was out there with us on the street with our strike banner.

I have so many fond memories of our time together at Air Canada as I’m sure other have too. He retired from Air Canada after 35 years of Service – in 2001. After retirement Gordon joined the Air Canada Pionairs organization in July 2001 and participated in many of their yearly meetings and events - especially their Christmas luncheons, where we met up with many old colleagues.

In 2003 we started our OAC Club and to stay connected he joined our Club and became one of our Charter members  - and for all those year ever since – he nearly attended every meeting and BBQ’s, usually arriving on his motorcycle – until the last years, where his health prevented him to be there. – we always had so many nice ‘chat’s and shared many memories with our old colleagues with lots of laughs from the good ol’ days in Air Canada. - and my husband enjoyed the stories Gordon told about his many bike trips.

I shall miss him so much as he was not only a long-time friend and colleague - but also such a wonderful and dependable help to me and to all of us in the OAC Club, where he was our Phone Committee Chair for years took care of calling all those not on computers to advise them of all our meetings as well as sending them by regular mail our Minutes after each meeting.

I also remember the earlier years where we stood outside our house in Burnaby and waved to Gordon driving by on this bike on Barnet Highway in the Annual Vancouver Motorcycle Christmas Toy Run for children. - We still miss him driving by – as in 2016 over 2,000 riders attended the event – so we thought of him.

Gordon was also a member of ‘Langley Road Riders’ and we met many of their members at the graveyard service held in Burnaby on Feb. 02nd   -  in his honour by members from his legion   - and where his ashes were laid to rest in the family plot.

I have known Gordon for 34 years ever since I met him in 1983 where I transferred to the airport from the reservation office . He was a very private man and not often divulged much about his personal life....but little by little he opened up and I got a bit of insight to his life. He did not show his emotions and was very discrete - but inside he had a heart of gold and was a very caring person. I remember whenever someone was sick or had a problem, he was a good listener and even went to the persons home to offer his help.

We are all deeply saddened to hear of Gordon sudden passing. Many of your friends from Air Canada, the OAC Club and the AC Pionairs were gathered at his Celebration of Life on Mar. 31, 2018 in Surrey to say a final farewell….

                                    Amongst us he will be remembered,
                                    many memories clings to his name;
                                    Those who knew him in life, sincerely
                                    will remember him in death just the same.
